According to Danish newspaper Børsen, Apple has acquired Spektral, a Danish computer vision startup, they developed a technology that can use in photos and videos to intelligently separate people and objects from the original background and cover with new backgrounds that driven by deep neural networks and spectral graph theory.
Apple acquired Spektral at the end of 2017 for approximately $30 million, formerly known as CloudCutout. Spektral co-founders Henrik Paltoft and Toke Jansen are currently working for Apple as computational imaging Managers, who founded the company in 2014.
Spektrial's technology kind like a real-time "green screen" process that power by machine learning algorithms, the groundbreaking and unique technology are based on state-of-the-art machine learning and computer vision techniques. It's capable of processing images and video from cameras directly in real time (60 FPS) on the device.
Spektral's site says that the company's solutions can create unique and immersive mixed-reality content. Apple can integrate the technology into the iPhone's camera, for apps like Messages and Facetime, or use the technology for augmented reality projects.
