The all-new 2018 Volvo XC40 is finally launched. So, It’s basically a measured down XC60. All set to arrive in an entry-level luxury SUV segment, the XC40 gives a whole new view for Volvo India, for the segment which is now-a-days become a reflection of the changing choice of young buyers which are ready to buy compact luxury cars.
Firstly, the XC40 will be the first model to use Volvo’s CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) which will further also be used in brand’s upcoming cars of the 40 Series family which also has fully electric vehicles. Also said that it borrows plenty of hints from its SPA platform SUVs which includes XC60 and 8XC90. Which includes running gear, interior bits and some of the design. Speaking of which, the XC40 has look-wise the more SUV-like designs.

About the details, the XC40 has been manufactured using the same design details as of XC60 and the XC90. Naturally, it looks same in basic styling – clean, simple lines and pointing details. The headlights are now T-shaped daytime running lights that looks more familiar and robust. The doors contain a heavily sculpted lower section, with this steeply sloping window line matches well with the overall look. Talking of rear, it is the same pattern Volvo with the vertical stacking taillights which looks superbly detailed and beautiful when lit. Overall, the XC40 defines a lot from its design and is easy compared to better looking cars in this segment.
How is it on the inside?
Going inside we see a change in the XC40, especially if you have seen the cars of this segment. Unlike the German cars which uses plenty of beige color and contains horizontally-biased surface for the dashboard, this Volvo basically uses black to set the mood and details vertical elements. You get a lot of look-alike from the XC60 and the XC90, namely the digital infotainment panel, the super-good three-spoke alloy and the vertical touchscreen systems and the a/c vents.

The XC40 contains among the most supporting front seats of the segment - which are large and subsequently wide having just the right amount of space with perfect cushioning. Also, you can easily find a suitable driving position as because of plethora of steering and seat adjustment. The leather seats also include manually extendable seating base for more support for thighs. Sadly, these things cannot be said as you move onto the back – although the rear bench is well shaped for good lateral support also there’s good legroom and headroom, sadly the cabin is narrow, making this car a restricted to a four-seater. Lastly, although you get a large sunroof overhead, still you cannot escape from the helmed in feeling which you get from small rear windows and an all-black upholstery.

Under the hood of the XC40 there is Volvo’s 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine matched to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with a Haldex AWD system. Different from XC60 and the XC90 as they come with the D5 spec (235bhp/480Nm) motor, also the XC40 uses D4 spec. Giving 190bhp and 400Nm, it is not a rubber smoking powerhouse, but still XC40 doesn’t really has to be. XC40 is all about smoothness, performance thanks to the class leading output, which feels fairly crisp as a routine driver.

The XC40 runs on convenient, nonadjustable dampers and steel springs in contrast to that the XC60 and the XC90 runs on air suspension on all wheels. Nonetheless, XC60 gives a great deal of comfort at slow speeds.

The fully specked Volvo XC40 R-Design priced at Rs 39.9 lakhs will go against the BMW X1 20d M Sport which is priced at Rs 44.50 lakhs also the Audi Q3 35 TDI Technology Pack which is priced at Rs 43.59 lakhs. Both ex-showroom Mumbai.
