I know this is not the type of articles we have on this blog, After all the is the Applesheep not its google equivalent. But theres no denying that google is a major player in today's tech space. Google has their fingers in a lot of pies.Just a quick google search about Google's services and apps will lead you to a list that is very long . But just how has Google's core business grown over the past 10 or 12 years?

So How Much Data Does Google Have?

So the other day I was uploading a few photos and videos onto google photos, which totalled a few gigabytes, and that got m thinking if Google allows an individual to store as many photos and videos as they want on their sever ( I have about 10400 photos and videos ) how much data does google have in all? So I did some digging and according to most estimates,  Google has about 10-15 exabytes of data. Wait you don't know what a exabyte is? Well 1024 gigabytes make up a terabyte, 1024 terabytes make up a petabyte likewise 1024 petabytes make up a exabyte and google has 15 of them. To put things in context if all the words ever spoken were transcribed as text we'd have about 5 exabytes of data. All the words from the beginning of time and Google can store that 3 times over. This is really no surprise with the world becoming more and more connected we're generating more data than ever. 90% of all the data ever created has been created over the last two years. This trend is only going to continue with more people coming online than ever before we're going to see even more data be generated.

But It Always Wasn't Like This

Researching this article I found a post from 2006 which pretty much answered the question how much data does Google have from a 2006 standpoint. You can find the article here. According to the 2006 estimate Google had about a thousand terabytes of data in 2006. Give or take a few hundred terabytes. Let that sink in Google had the storage of about 500 of todays average PCs back in 2006. I find that to be just phenomenal. So Google Went from 1 petabyte to15 exabytes. Thats a growth of 1578947% in just 10 years. The world really has come a long way in 10 years.
