Today, Dialog Semiconductor, the iPhone power management chip supplier that has been working with Apple for many years, announced in London that it will reach a $600 million deal with Apple, including its power management technology patent licensing, partial asset transfers, and 300 research & development engineers deliver it to Apple.
Apple's power management chip has long relied on Dialog, the world's largest manufacturer of power management chips, primarily for smartphones and IoT devices. From this point of view, Apple can not only benefit from the team of advanced power management chip engineers familiar with their products, but also help their technical departments to get more chip development support throughout Europe.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2019. Apple will pay first $300 million, and prepay $300 million in advance for the next three (2019~2021) purchases, including power management, audio subsystems, etc. The 300 technicians who hired by Apple accounted for 16% of the Dialog staff, and the company will take over some of Dialog's equipments in Italy, the UK and Germany.
Self-designing a power management chip so it can be better integrated with its A-series processors and wireless chips. In addition, Apple is also embarking on self-developed GPUs. By acquire the technology, it sure will help Apple further reduce costs, improve battery efficiency or even promote the future of virtual reality and augmented reality glasses.
