With the iPhone X out of the way we're now starting to focus on the iPhone X+ or whatever it will be called. With the iPhone X they couldn't really afford to come out with two new phones in 2017 as components such as FaceID and the whole manufacturing process was very constrained as it was a brand new design. But a year later Apple seems to have got a handle on things and seeing the great sales of the iPhone X, Apple seems to be ready to spread their wings into the + market.

Why Differentiate At All?

The iPhone X has been selling really well despite the rumours that state the contrary. A 6.5 inch plus model iPhone can really go a long way in keeping the lineup fresh and exciting. Just look at the Galaxy S8 and S9. Though great phones they lacked they didn't bring anything new and fresh to the table. Apple is in a unique advantageous position to bring something new to the table with the rumoured iPhone X+.  Since the iPhone 7 people have flocked to the larger variant of the iPhone. The  iPhone 7+ outsold the iPhone 7 and similarly the iPhone 8+ outsold the 8. So if done right this could convince a whole lot of people to upgrade.

Differentiation Through Software

The iPhone X is as feature packed as it gets. It has everything you'd want from a 2017 flagship and at that price point you're well within your rights to expect exactly that. So saving hardware features like dual cameras or slo-mo video is out of the question. You really can't compromise at the iPhone X's price point. So what do we have to work with that ginormous display! While that giant display might be enough to make some people upgrade, it's unlikely to entice the vast majority of iPhone users. Remember how I talked about how the iPhone 7 plus and iPhone 8+ out sold their smaller siblings? Looking at the iPhone 6 and 6+ we see a different picture the iPhone 6+ was just a bigger iPhone 6 and unsurprisingly it didn't sell all that well.

Apple can really work wonders with the 6.5 inch iPhone X+ as we have so much screen real-estate.

We're approaching iPad like screen sizes with the 6.5 inch iPhone X+. Now that screens are so big I think it's time to start bringing some of those iPad multitasking features to the iPhone X+. Like picture in picture and split view. Split view doesn't really make sense on a 4.7 inch phone as I haven't found it particularly useful on such small phones and I don't find myself drawn to it.  A move like this will obviously draw attention from the productivity crowd people who look at spreadsheets, emails and presentations a lot on their phone and not so much from the average texter or Facebook user who might be satisfied with the regular iPhone X variant. If software features can propel the iPhone X , iPhone 7+ and the iPhone 8+ to the forefront I can see no reason as to why the same cannot be done for the iPhone X+.
